How to Choose a Motorcycle for City Use?

When buying a motorcycle for city use, do not look at the engine displacement first, but at how many kilometers you travel per day.

For a short route of 5-10 kilometers, 50 cc may be sufficient. If you will use it for 20-30 kilometers every day, you can look at the 125 cc class, and for longer distances and fast-flowing roads, the 150 cc class.

The city you live in also changes the choice. Someone commuting long distances every day in Istanbul does not need the same motorcycle as someone traveling a few kilometers between home and work in a small town.

50 CC: For Short Distances

If you are going to use the motorcycle mainly for commuting, running errands, or short daily tasks, you can consider the 50 cc class.

You do not need to change gears with the CVT transmission. If you are constantly stop-and-go at traffic lights, intersections, and in heavy traffic, this makes your job easier during use.

If you are looking for a motorcycle that you will use regularly between home and work and want more performance than 50 cc, you can look at the 125 cc class.

150 CC: If the Distance Increases

City use does not always mean short distances. Especially in big cities, the daily distance between home and work can easily reach 20-30 kilometers.

If you use ring roads or spend more time on the motorcycle during the day, you can look at the 150 cc class.

It is a different option for users who want higher performance than the PS4 or RS6 and have longer daily routes.

Scooter or Geared Motorcycle?

If you are buying a motorcycle mainly for transportation, one of the significant advantages of a scooter is ease of use.

With automatic models, you don't have to deal with a clutch and gears. Especially on routes with many traffic lights and stop-and-go traffic, you will feel this difference every day.

In geared motorcycles, the rider controls the gear changes themselves. If you are going to use the motorcycle not only for transportation but also for the joy of riding, you can also look at geared models.

If this is going to be your first motorcycle and your priority is daily use, examining scooter models can be a good start.

Gasoline or Electric?

If you are considering an electric motorcycle, first determine where you will charge it.

If you live in an apartment, do you have the opportunity to charge it where you park the motorcycle? Can you charge it at work? How many kilometers is your daily commute?

If the answers are favorable, you can look at electric models.

Values like 2.2 L/100 km or 2.5 L/100 km may not tell much on their own. It is easier to calculate based on your own daily kilometers.

If you travel 20 kilometers a day, it amounts to approximately 600 kilometers per month. If you use the motorcycle regularly throughout the year, the total distance can easily exceed several thousand kilometers.

Therefore, when comparing motorcycles, look not only at the purchase price but also at the fuel consumption.

Do Not Overlook Height and Weight

After you buy the motorcycle, you will take it out of the parking spot every day, maneuver at low speeds, and sit on it for long periods.

Especially if this is going to be your first motorcycle, sit on it if possible before buying.

Do your feet touch the ground comfortably? Can you reach the handlebars easily? Can you control the motorcycle easily while it is stationary?

These are details you won't see in a technical specifications table but will notice in daily use.

Check the Service Before You Buy

Instead of looking for a service center after you buy the motorcycle, check if there is one in your city before purchasing.

You will have periodic maintenance done, and you may need spare parts over time.

Especially if you are going to use the motorcycle to commute every day, include access to service and spare parts in your purchasing decision.

First, calculate your daily mileage. Then consider the roads you use and your charging options. After making your choice of gasoline or electric, compare models that fit your budget.
